Getting to know Alcoy

ALCOY. THE CITY OF BRIDGES

54 Km from Alicante and 105 Km from Valencia, located in the mid-southern area of the Valencian Region, lies Alcoy, the city of bridges, of the Moors and Christians Festival and of the textile industry. Surrounded by mountains, it has grown and changed its appearance at the rate of its own economical growth. Alcoy's urban layout has always been conditioned by roads full of bends and cut by cliffs from where the waters of a river flow down. This used to be the hydraulic power that defined the industrial vocation of the city. The bridges are the main support of the movement of traffic and they made it possible for the widening of the city. Apart from the small bridges that compose the old road network, the big bridges of María Cristina, Sant Roc, Petxina, Viaducto de Canalejas, Sant Jordi and Fernando Reig (inaugurated in 1987) are true examples of modern engineering at the service of public works.

A PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK: A CITY WITH PROSPECTS

Alcoy is the main town of a district called L'Alcoià and has a population of 65.000 inhabitants. The town's working population has traditionally been devoted to the textile, paper and metallurgic industries. However, recent years have brought about jobs in the chemical industry (cosmetics) food (stuffed olives, confectionery, liqueurs…) as well as in the service sector. The isolation of this town, due to difficult road access, marked the character of its people as being innovative and entrepreneurs. Most of the old factories that were still in use some years ago have been restored for social use. For example, Papeleras Reunidas S.A. the building which has become the Instituto Tecnológico Textil (Textile Technologic Institute) and the Centro Europeo de Empresas Innovadoras (European Centre for Innovative Enterprises). Other examples are the old textile factory Ferrándiz that has been turned into the Escuela Politécnica Superior de Alcoy (Polytechnic College of Alcoy). The infrastructure and services available together with an extensive municipal borough district 7.5 Sq. Km in size have helped the city to obtain a high quality of life and make Alcoy into a town with prospects.
