The city of Alcoy, being a pioneer in many other social aspects, has also inherited much of the Valencian traditional culture, of which is a reference point. Nowadays, there are three brass bands, a symphonic orchestra and several dance and musical organisations what, Music's Friends Association. The Conservatorio Municipal de Música y Danza Joan Cantó (Joan Cantó Music and Dance Municipal Conservatory) is a place to study and launch musicians, composers and artists. Alcoy's cultural and artistic events are also traditionally represented by its own theatre groups. The Ciutat d'Alcoi Prize for Theatre Plays and the Annual Theatre Show are outstanding events. The Cultural Center (former Bank of Spain building), La Llotja de Sant Jordi (multifunctional conference room built by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava), the new Theatre Calderón and Theatre Principal, the city's public parks and other exhibition halls and show-rooms hold the cultural programmes and activities developed by different associations. |
