A CITY WITH HISTORY In this land, there have been prehistoric settlements since the Middle Palaeolithic as well as artistic demonstrations and prehistoric cave paintings since the Neolithic. They are sheltered in rock caves near the neighbouring hamlet of La Sarga. The Iberian culture in Alcoy is outstanding and visiting its discoveries in the settlement and sanctuary of La Serreta is a must. They consists of a collection of Iberian engravings on lead tablets, terracotta votive offerings, pottery, and so on, all of which can be seen at the premises and show rooms of the Archaeological Museum. The urban area was born in 1256 as a result of the desire for colonising and maintaining the southern frontier in what used to be the kingdom of Valencia. This took place after the Christian conquest by king James I.
From the early years in the 16th century the already existing wool industry underwent an expansion that brought along people from the surrounding areas to settle in Alcoy. During the 18th century the town went through an economic boost which turned Alcoy into the first Valencian industrial centre. By that time the paper industry had started to be a new flourishing activity. This overall situation implied a demographic increase as well as the implementing of a capitalist production system.
